Pakistan Stroke Society was established in 2001.The main objective of the Society is to improve prevention and care of Stroke in Pakistan by increasing Public and Physicians awareness.
The first president of society was Dr. Sardar Alam (Peshawar) and first Secretary was Dr. Saad Shafqat ( Aga Khan university, Karachi). The executive council elects a new president every two years.
The society is actively working for the last four years in both dimensions. A Stroke awareness week was organized by PSS in 2004 which included Seminars, public awareness sessions and a walk with stroke patients. First International Stroke Conference was held in 2004 in Lahore. More than ten speakers from US, Canada and India participated in Conference.
In 2005, six Stroke seminars have been organized in Karachi, Islamabad, Bahawalpur, and Multan.
Pakistan Stroke Society is affiliated with International Stroke Society, which is an advisory body to WHO. The society has more than 200 physician members. In 2006, Society plans to organize World Stroke Day, Second International Stroke Conference, Stroke seminars and public awareness sessions. Web site is under construction and a Stroke information booklet is under preparation. |
